Farm Bill
Update
Still Possible for Senate to Complete Bill Before End
of Year
National Farmers Union joined 18 organizations in a letter to Senate
Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and
Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.,
urging the Senate to complete work on a new farm bill before
the end of the year. Senate leadership has worked through the
recess to reach a compromise on the amendments that would be
offered should farm bill discussions resume when the Senate
convenes at 2:00 today. As of press time, no agreement has
been announced. We cannot stress how important it is
that your Senators hear from you and your support for this
bill. If Congress fails to pass a new farm bill the bill's
record investments in nutrition, conservation, renewable
fuels, specialty crops will be lost. Call or email your Senators
today and urge them to act on the farm bill as soon as
possible.

Minnesota Annual
Convention a Success Policy
Debated, Officers Elected
Minnesota Farmers Union
held its 66th annual state convention Nov. 17 - 18. More than
250 MFU members attended. "One of the strengths of
Minnesota Farmers Union is our grassroots nature of policy
development," said Doug Peterson, Minnesota Farmers Union
President. "I believe the convention was a complete success,
and I thank all the members for helping make MFU the strong
organization that it is." During the convention, the
members went page by page through MFU's policy and made
changes. Members also agreed to support a request to
administer the federal crop insurance program, setting
priorities for the next generation of biofuels, the
passage of a new farm bill and the improvement of corn-based
ethanol to move Minnesota to the next generation of cellulosic
biofuels. Peterson and Vice President Dennis Sjodin were
re-elected to their posts for another two years. Delegates to
the National Farmers Union Convention to be held March 2 - 4
in Las Vegas were also elected. Tom Buis, National
Farmers Union President was the keynote speaker on Saturday
night. "It was great to be at the Minnesota Farmers Union
State Convention," said Buis. "I always enjoy meeting our
members and hearing what they have to say about what's
happening in rural
America." | |

Michigan: Michigan Farmers Union
President Marilynn Momber presented the President's Choice
Award for outstanding service to JoAnn Shumway during the 70th
annual MFU convention on Nov. 7. JoAnn is carrying on a family
tradition of service to MFU started many years ago when her
father served as president of the Michigan farm organization.
"If it were not for volunteers like JoAnn, MFU would not have
existed for 70 years," Momber said. Minnesota: Archie Baumann of
Wells, Minn., received the Outstanding Service Award from Minnesota Farmers Union
at the organization's annual convention Nov. 17. The award has
only been given two other times. "Archie has been a
great advocate for Minnesota Farmers Union on so many levels.
It is a pleasure to honor him with this award," said Doug
Peterson, Minnesota Farmers Union president. "Archie has spent
his lifetime supporting family farms, and helping build
Farmers Union, and I thank him for his efforts."
